Lord Byron, I Heart You!

I'm a big fan of classic romantic literature, especially poetry.

This is one of my favorite poems by English poet, Lord Byron:

She Walks In Beauty

SHE walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that 's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Fun story:

My brothers (twins and four years my junior) went to the same English boarding school that Byron attended. Anyway, they took me for a walk through the grounds one day and we wound our way up a grassy knoll, at the top of which was a sinking and decrepit looking tomb. One of my brothers told me to sit on the thing for a picture (which I can't find!) and then proceeded to tell me that the same spot on which I was sitting was where Byron wrote much of his earlier poetry.

Here is a painting of Byron on that exact tomb. Pretty cool, eh?

So some fun facts about Lord Byron:

* He was 5'11" and apparently was pretty hot, by English standards in the early 1800s anyway.

* For most of his life he was a vegetarian

* He died at 36 from a fever contracted while in Greece. Very sad day! :(

* Everything he did was in excess and he incurred huge debts, had numerous love affairs (he was known as a total womanizer)

* He may have been bipolar or may have suffered from depression

* He had a club foot. At the time because he was so popular, people actually would walk with a limp in honor of Byron--he made it fashionable.

Here is a picture of him:

Hmm, seems pretty handsome to me!

Mystical Monday

Okay so obviously it isn't Monday but I like the alliteration in "Mystical Monday" and "Mystical Tuesday" just doesn't have the same ring to it. I promise to be on time next week!

As you might remember, I decided to revamp this blog and actually make it interesting so as part of that, today I'm going to introduce to you the mystical creature of the week...Brownies!

And, no, don't think chocolate fudge with walnuts...think little household elves in Scotland...

Brownies:

* are invisible to adults. Children can see them
* they don't like to be seen and therefore only work at night
* are considered elves or household goblins
* most live in farmhouses and other country buildings within Scotland
* they make their homes in any unused sections of the farmhouses in which they reside

Fun fact: This is how you spell Brownie in Scottish Gaelic: brunaidh, uruisg or gruagach (I would love to hear any of you try and pronounce that!)

Will work for food!
Although Brownies don't like traditional forms of payment (they won't take cash or credit) they do like payments in the form of food. And they especially like porridge and honey.

What do Brownies do?

They basically do the household work for whatever family they live with! OMG love!! And the household doesn't even have to pay them! Love that even more! (Actually if a Brownie is offered payment, they vanish and never return to that family...)

Brownies are said to be very protective creatures, especially of the family they live with and they become very attached to the these families. So if the family decides to up and move, guess who's coming with them? The invisible goblin maids!

So next time you're depressed about the mess in your house, pack up plenty of cream of wheat and honey and move to Scotland...if not for the Brownies, then for the hot men in kilts!

Here's a pic of a Brownie:

Updating this blog--finally some ideas on something to say!

So I feel like in most aspects of social media, I've got my bases pretty well covered. I mean, I'm on Facebook a lot and I've recently become addicted to Pinterest (if you haven't checked it out, you don't know what you're missing. You pin images that you're interested in and then your friends repin them and so on and so on. I now am sinking in amazing looking recipes but anyhoo...) Twitter has always eluded me but I'm beginning to be okay with that--I just think I'm too verbose for 140 characters. So putting all that other stuff aside for a minute, it's blogging that's always been that proverbial thorn in my side because I just can't seem to get myself to sit down and blog. Why? Because I have no flipping clue what to write about. OK I know you're probably thinking: "Uh, HP, aren't you a writer? Isn't that what you're supposed to do by definition?" Yes, you're right and I know as a writer, I should have lots to say but invariably, I'm always stumped on what to write about. That might sound dumb but it's true. Well, that is, until now!

Yes, that's right, HP finally has a plan for this blog and it only took her two years to get there but better late than never, right!

So here's the plan... I am going to write about things that actually might be interesting to you--rather than random thoughts going through my head or what I'm doing at the moment (I'm really not that interesting). Instead, I've compiled a list of things that I get a kick out of and that might interest you too (I hope they do!)

So far, this is what I've got:

1. My favorites in pinterest for the week--that means awesome recipes, funny jokes, half naked hot men, the list goes on. (Note: this list is not in order of importance!)

2. Since I was an English major, I have a huge love for all things classic literature so thought I might share some of my fav poems and poets.

3. Inside the writer's studio: interviews with your favorite writers (as long as they aren't too snooty (read: as long as they'll let me interview them).

4. Inside the reader's studio: interviews with you, the readers! All the blogs out there are about writers but what about you? I love getting to know my readers so I thought this would be a fun way to reach out and find out what makes you tick!!!

5. Let's learn about...random mystical creature of the week! I do quite a bit of research into fantasy creatures for my books and some of the stuff I come across is pretty interesting so thought I'd share with you all!

6. Grab bag: just random stuff that doesn't fit the above categories.

That's all I've got at the moment but I'm definitely open to suggestions!!!!

So, now that all that stuff is out of the way, this is my favorite stuff from Pinterest this week!!!
