Finished Chapter 7 of the next Jolie book!

So, little by little I'm getting this puppy finished!
I just finished chapter 7 yesterday and I'm proposing to write
20 chapters total. So, a good chunk is done!
I swear I live, sleep and breathe this book. And I've been waking up
at 5 am everyday to get some quiet time to write. Now that is dedication!!!

What it means to be an indie

I just wrote a long post about my journey into becoming an indie urban fantasy, paranormal romance author over at my sister site, www.indieurbanfantasy.com.

Check it out:

Look how gorgeous this cover is!

So I just loaded three new authors to the indie site over at www.indieurbanfantasy.com and I just have to share this amazing cover with you!

Is that gorgeous or what? The book is by Daniel Arenson and here is a synopsis:

Outcast from Hell. Banished from Heaven. Lost on Earth.

The battle of Armageddon was finally fought... and ended with no clear victor. Upon
the mountain, the armies of Hell and Heaven beat each other into a bloody, uneasy
standstill, leaving the Earth in ruins. Armageddon should have ended with Heaven winning, ushering in an era of peace. That's what the prophecies said. Instead, the two armies--one of angels, one of demons--hunker down in the scorched planet, lick their wounds, and gear up for a prolonged war with no end in sight.

In this chaos of warring armies and ruined landscapes, Laila doesn't want to take sides. Her mother was an angel, her father a demon; she is outcast from both camps. And yet both armies need her, for with her mixed blood, Laila can become the ultimate spy... or ultimate soldier. As the armies of Heaven and Hell pursue her, Laila's only war is within her heart--a struggle between her demonic and heavenly blood.

OK so that one is on my reading list fo sure!! It would have made it just based on the cover alone but that description is pretty freakin' amazing as well!

Review of Fire Burn

Just thought I'd share this generous review of Fire Burn over at About Happy Books:

About Happy Books

Finished reading Along Came A Demon

I definitely recommend this book--Along Came A Demon--by Linda Welch. It's available as an ebook and as a paperback.
It's an urban fantasy and follows the story of Tiff, a headstron but sensitive telepath who works for the police and helps solve crimes.
It also involves demons and ghosts and is overall impossible to put down! LOL
Really good book and I'm definitely going to read book 2 so be sure to check it out!

Being an indie rocks!

Yesterday was the best day in terms of sales that I've had yet--my sales ranking got as low as 500 (out of 600,000 total books) and I was shocked! And I have no idea why yesterday was so great but I'm thrilled.

I have noticed that Amazon is ranking my books way better now than it was before. Warlock is really ranking decently well on searches relating to urban fantasy. So maybe that has something to do with it, I'm not sure.

But, I can't complain. In fact, I was doing the dance of joy last night! LOL
I think this just goes to show that self pubbed authors can be very successful. I keep coming across agent blogs that constantly say that self publishing isn't the way to go and you won't make any money, bla bla bla. To them I say, you're wrong! If you have a good story and you market it well and your covers are decent, the world is your oyster.

I really believe that self pubbing will be the way of the future because it allows the audience to decide what they do and don't like--not some snarky agent sitting in New York or a publishing house that keeps putting out the same old story year after year. When you put the control into the hands of the readers, that is exactly where it should be.

OK, I'll step down from my soapbox now.

Considering pubbing hard copy

Yesterday I received a very interesting email from someone saying he was interested in reviewing my books but alas, they are ebooks and he just had an aversion to reading ebooks. I can't say I blame him--unless you own an ereader, it's just not fun to be stuck at your computer for hours on end reading a book.

He mentioned that I should have some hard copy versions of my books and it got me to thinking...maybe I should!

To authors and readers out there, what are your thoughts?

I'm thinking of going the route of Createspace--any thoughts on that? Would love any advice or opinions.

I thought I should mention two blogs that have reviews of my books you might find interesting.

Each of the blogs are really interesting--both devoted to reviews of paranormal fiction and each is really well done.

Reading Along Came A Demon

So, I'm reading an urban fantasy book, Along Came A Demon, by Linda Welch.

Great book so far--I'm about halfway through. The story is in first person and I find I just really connect more with stories in first person, both in reading and writing. I tried to write in third person once and it was a miserable failure.

Along Came a Demon is about a psychic who has to figure out a mystery involving a death, a missing child and a bunch of demons! And one of those demons is H O T!

I find myself reading feverishly at night and I have to force myself to put the book down.

Definitely check this one out!

Just finished reading Book 1 of My Blood Approves Series

Hi All,
So wanted to let you know about another indie book I just finished reading.
This one is by Amanda Hocking and is titled My Blood Approves.
It's a young adult paranormal romance book.
I am terrible with reviews so I'll give you a quick overview--girl meets vampire and likes vampire. Girl meets vampire's family and likes them too, especially vampire's brother, uber hot vampire. Girl finds out uber hot brother vampire doesn't want anything to do with her although she is meant for him. Quandary.
I really enjoyed the setup of the love triangle and I'm curious to see what happens in subsequent books.
Check them out if you get a chance. Here is Amanda's page on our indie site:

Reached a new high in sales ranking today!

So, I'm not sure if all of you have noticed on Amazon but when you are looking at a book's page, if you scroll down to the middle of the page, it will tell you how that book ranks in the Kindle universe.

I believe there are 600,000 books in the Kindle universe. Well, I've been averaging around the 1,500 mark for a while now which is definitely awesome but I've been really trying to get to the three digit mark, which is pretty tough to do.

Well...today I did it! I got down to 943! I was really surprised and super excited. So I just wanted to share this great news.

I really think that becoming an indie author was the best move I've made in my writing career. I've been thrilled with the whole experience so far.

Thank you to everyone who has taken a chance on my books!!!

True Blood: Vampire Vs. Werewolf

I'm sure most of you probably watch True Blood?
I am a few episodes behind but in the last couple episodes, they introduced the character of Alcide the wolf. And, boy, is he a looker! LOL
I used to think Eric was the be all end all but now I have to say I'm a fan of the wolf.
What about all of you? Are you loyal Eric fans or have any of you switched to wolfman?

Check out our new blog over at indie urban fantasy

So, I finally got myself in gear and put together a master blogging calendar for the various indie authors who wanted to blog at my sister site, www.indieurbanfantasy.com.

There are two great blog posts up there now--one of them is all about magic and goes in depth into what magic means for various authors. The other blog post is all about vampires and both are really interesting reads!

And Mary revamped the look and feel of the blog and it really looks fantastic!

Bridget Jones

I was watching the first Bridget Jones again last night with my niece (she liked it but not as much as 16 Candles or Breakfast Club).

How much do I love that movie? A lot. And I seriously have a thing for Colin Firth. Ever since I was a kid and watched him as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, I totally got a crush on him.

I like the second Bridget Jones too.

So, I ask you, which one do you like better--first Bridget or second? And who do you like better, Firthy or Hugh Grant?

I vote:
First Bridget Jones

Check out www.indieurbanfantasy.com

So, I have to tell you all, I am so excited about this new website--www.indieurbanfantasy.com!

In case some of you don't know, I created this website once I realized there really weren't any sites out there dedicated to indies in urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

The site has been growing by leaps and bounds! We are now up to 21 indies and I still have a handful I have to add. (Hopefully this weekend)

We have a full time reader/reviewer named Michelle and she is just awesome. She is super in depth with her reviews and her blog is fantastic. Definitely check that out. She has a great review of Tina Folsom's book, Samson's Lovely Mortal: indie urban fantasy reviews blog

So, not only do we have Michelle, but we also have Mary who just signed up with us and she runs our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Please "like" our facebook page when you get a chance:

Sixteen Candles, Love!

The other day I was watching Sixteen Candles with my 14 year old niece. (Makes me sound crazy old, doesn't it? LOL She's my niece by marriage. Hey, I'm only 33).

Anyway, she said Sixteen Candles is now her favorite movie ever, even slightly better than Eclipse. How cool is that?

I was always a mondo fan of the Brat Pack movies--Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club.
And, yes, I love love love Sixteen Candles. That movie was pretty darn funny--the line about Long Duck Dong taking the grandparent's automobile makes me crack up even after seeing it 10+ times.

I would have to say my fav fav though is The Breakfast Club. And I'm a little embarrassed to admit it but every time I watch the ending, where the nerdy guy reads the letter, I get teary eyed.

Graphic Novels

So, I've been thinking more and more about turning Fire Burn into a graphic novel (think comic book). And if it's successful, I'll do the same for To Kill A Warlock.

I talked about this in my last post but realized I didn't offer any links so people could see just what a graphic novel looks like. I compare them to comic books but they are pretty different (none of that dot stuff--this is full on art!)

Here's a link to the first book in the Anita Blake series: Anita Blake Guilty Pleasures

And here is a link to the first book of the Twilight series: Twilight

Pretty neat, don't you think? I have always been fascinated with how other people visualize characters I read about, whether in movies, TV or art.

So, I ask all of you, would you read a graphic novel of Fire Burn or Warlock?

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

So, I had this idea...

I forget where I had read this but recently I read something about the fact that many urban fantasy authors are having their books made into graphic novels, aka comic books.

Of course, this was already a trend for Laurell K. Hamilton and her Anita Blake books. But, I also had heard that the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris was also going this route and it looks like Twilight also has a comic book associated with it.

So, guess what? Yep, I was thinking about making a comic book for Fire Burn. OK, so let me qualify this statement--I wouldn't do the art. I'd just write the content. I'm in the process of looking for an artist to see where this idea can go. If you know of any artists who won't charge me an arm and a leg, let me know!

And, also, let me know what you think of the idea. Would you be interested in reading a comic book of Fire Burn? I really liked reading the comic versions of the Anita Blake stories and thought this might be a good angle for me to take.

Would love to hear what you all think!

So, I'm still in Indiana but headed back tomorrow. If I haven't returned your email, I just haven't had a chance yet so please be patient!

Happy Friday!

Woo Hoo, it's the end of the week.

So, tonight I'm headed out to Indiana for my day job (online marketing). I have a conference at this super cool place called The West Baden Springs Hotel which was constructed way back when in the 1800s. So fun! Well, it's also a golf resort so guess what the hubby is going to be doing? And, might I add, in 95 degree weather with 100% humidity! Ouch!

In book news, I just finished chapter 2 of Fire Burn and hope to start on Chapter 3 today. It's coming along swimmingly! LOL

I need to get off my tushca and start writing chapter one of the follow up to Warlock. I have the outline and some ideas swimming around in my head but that's it for now.

I did get the IPAD for my bday and I'm loving it! What is great is that I'll now be able to write wherever I am which was something I sorely needed to be able to do.

More to come later and thanks again to all of you who took the surveys on Fire Burn and Warlock. Very interesting results so far!!!

And I've kept your responses in mind as I work on my follow up books!

Take a 10 question survey about my books!

So, I was talking to one of my readers who read both Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and To Kill A Warlock and I was asking her questions about the characters, etc. and she gave me some really great reader insight.

It occurred to me that it would be really interesting to find out what the majority of my readers think about various subjects regarding my books.

Then I thought, how am I going to do that? The proverbial light bulb went off and I decided to create a quick survey whereby I could ask you, my readers, all the questions I've been wondering about when it comes to my books.

If you are interested in having your opinion heard, visit this link and take my survey. It'll be maybe 2 mins of your time. I'll share the results with everyone as soon as I get a decent number of them back. And, maybe I'll use your answers to help shape follow up books!

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble Book 2 Info!!!!

The latest:

Book 2 has a name (drum roll)... Toil and Trouble

And I've finished chapter one and sent it off to be edited! Woo Hoo

I'm aiming for a chapter a week to make my six month goal (might be early).

And I've started outlining book 2 of To Kill A Warlock, but I don't have that book titled yet.

I also wanted to mention that if you have any ideas of things you would like to see included in the books, let me know.

One reader emailed me about something she wanted to see in book 2 of Fire Burn and it was something I'd been meaning to include anyway so it made it into chapter 1!!!!

Indie Urban Fantasy Site Expanding!

So, if you haven't checked out this new site I've been working on, go check it out!

I've now got about 10 or so indies on the site and getting more day by day so I'm really excited about it.

I still need bloggers, a reviewer, and someone to help with the Facebook page if anyone is interested.

Fun stuff!
